Every four years, we’re told that this is the most important election in history, that the threats to our country are existential, and that if we don’t do something right now, our freedoms will be lost. But do we know what threatens our rights? If we fight the wrong battles, then the war for our rights will be lost.
Once again, we’re being told that there’s an existential threat to our country and the next election is the most important in history.
While many people make these claims, it often seems as if one person’s threat is another person’s salvation. How do we know what threats to our rights, our nation, and our future are? How do we weed out the actual threats from the political posturing? We start by looking at the alleged threat.
Has anyone else noticed that, while claims of threats to our democracy come from both political parties, how often do they try to push power to the bureaucracies, which are, by definition, undemocratic? I know the United States is not a democracy but a republic, meaning we elect representatives to exercise our power in our name. Yet both sides seem to be working hard to corrupt the election process for their own gains, replacing the people’s will with the political party’s will.
How many people depend on the unelected judiciary to protect our rights? It’s almost as if people don’t want a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. I guess John Francis Mercer was correct: the greatest threats to this nation do not come from outside but from within.
