The attack against a synagogue in California was one more reminder that the rise of anti-Semitism in America is raising specters of Germany in the 1930s. And the push by new Congresswomen to promote a switch to socialism in America reminds us of the Soviet Union then and Venezuela now. Santayana said “Those who don’t learn from history are destined to repeat it.” So this week we will look to history to see if we can find the clues to our own national salvation.
What will it take for President Trump to win a second term? Right now, the 2020 presidential field is crowded with Democratic hopefuls, while potential Republican challengers sit, watch and wait. Only a couple of Republican unknowns, Governor Weld (R-MA) and Congressman Seth Moulton (R-MA) have dared venture forward. At this juncture, there are many unanswered questions. Will the Democrats continue to beat the impeachment drum? Will voters hold Democrats accountable for not addressing important issues such as immigration, health care reform, and the economy? Is President Trump vulnerable? If so, what can he do to enhance his chances of reelection? Most importantly, what role will Catholic and evangelical voters play in the 2020 election? The elderly, the disabled, single moms, and veterans would be the recipient of Rodney’s generosity. “When I first started, I just had my car and my lawnmower; that’s all I had,” explains Rodney Smith Jr., “I was cutting lawns between classes. I was a college student and just graduated recently with a bachelor’s in computer science. We know a lot about the enslavement and emancipation of the black descendants of African slaves. Much less is known, however, about human trafficking in America. Human trafficking is about the continued enslavement of men, women, and children living in our cities and towns. Often, we see human trafficking as simply an international problem. We fail to recognize and acknowledge that it is a serious problem for our nation that is not just confined to the seedy parts of town. Greg Nance found himself is such a place for seven long years. As he explains, there were weekends where he would engage with thirty to forty drinks. He became the life of the party⏤except it was no party!
