If, at first, you don’t succeed, throw another billion dollars at the problem. That’s the way governments tend to deal with their failures, not with honest introspection and evaluation, but just throwing more of your money at it. As Ronald Reagan famously said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” So why do We, the People, keep looking for the government to fix our problems if they’ve been so bad at it in the past? I think part of the reason is that we’ve been educated and trained to believe that the government is the first choice when it comes to deciding just about everything. This means that We, the People, are just as foolish and corrupt as those in government.
If governments have made such a mess of so many things, what’s the alternative? Choice. Think about it: of all the institutions and industries that the government controls, where there is no real choice, how many are running well? Education, healthcare, and banking are just a few examples where failure is rewarded with more funding. What if We, the People, really had a choice? Not just a choice of doctor but of how we pay for our healthcare. It is not just what bank we use but the regulations the bank follows. What if we could send our children to the school of our choice without paying twice for their education?
While those are the classic examples, today, I want to look at some more recent government failures, how they have been handled, and what we, the People, can do about them.
