As part of the Republicans’ continuing impeachment inquiry — yes, that is still going on — GOP lawmakers have been in an ongoing fight with the DOJ. At the center of the disagreement is the recorded deposition of President Joe Biden testifying about the classified documents during the Robert Hur investigation.
A transcript of that deposition has been released. Still, the DOJ has admitted they cleaned up some of it, and the Republicans investigating the matter want to see the recording for themselves. The DOJ and Merrick Garland have refused to turn over the audio/video. Congress voted to hold Garland in contempt, yet that didn’t compel Garland to produce the recorded deposition.
Anna Paulina-Luna (R-FL) had previously threatened a rarely used tactic to compel Garland. Inherent contempt has been used over 100 times in American history, but not since 1935. If voted for, inherent contempt gives the Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives the authority to arrest Merrick Garland and force him to release the Biden deposition.
Speaker Mike Johnson has supported the effort, and Luna has pledged to force the vote. The slim majority in the House leaves little room for the vote, and two Republican defectors have already indicated that they will not support the measure. The vote was expected on June 28, but it will now be taken after the July recess.
Whenever it is taken, the Republicans won’t have enough votes for the inherent contempt to be passed.Again, it will be just more political theater, and the American people will have no answers or accountability.
In this episode of ‘Truth Be Told with Booker Scott, ’ we will dive into the characters at the center of this contempt attempt.
