When did the term “Populist” become a pejorative? Why would being concerned with what the people think become a bad idea? The answer is simple: when the elites thought that they knew better and had the legal and moral authority to tell the “Deplorables” what to do.
A recent YouTube video of a debate at the Oxford Union that Nancy Pelosi participated in included an interesting position from a gentleman named Winston Marshall. While several clips have seemed to make their way around the Internet, there are a few others I think are worth discussing here.
After all, if populism describes anything, it’s what Abraham Lincoln wished for in his Gettysburg Address:
“that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth”
