Every year, Scholastic Books holds book fairs in schools across the country as a fundraiser. I know my children have always asked for money to buy trinkets and books during the week of the book fair, but I rarely considered the books they might purchase during these school fundraisers. I assumed every book or item would be safe since it was during school.
I was wrong. It isn’t the first time and won’t be the last, either. Read with Pride week 2024 is here. It is the Scholastic Book Company’s creation, and they promote it to your children and grandchildren. So, parents, beware before you send money with your children to the book fair in their public school. Make sure you have a conversation with your children before they buy something you wouldn’t want them to read or see.
Scholastic Books even provides a book list with a helpful grid for age-appropriate LGTBQIA+ content. This is a direct quote from their guide, “Use this grid to ensure your bookshelves include diverse LGTQIA+ representation and to support readers in finding books that depict specific queer identities and experiences.”
