Nasal Oral Sanitation just may have been the silver bullet of the 2020 Covid pandemic. Regrettably, we learned, too late, I’m afraid, just how uninformed the American medical community was…specifically about the importance of Nasal Oral, Sanitation in the treatment of upper airway diseases…LIKE COVID.

My May 4, 2023, special guest appearance on Nurses Out Loud is Stan Lech, A 35-year veteran of the consumer products industry and the CEO founder, and creator of Immunemist 1% Iodine, Nasal and Oral Cleanse.  As a degreed formulation chemist, who worked his way up in 25 years to lead consumer healthcare as global VP of R&D with GlaxoSmithKline and a recognized global expert in oral and respiratory health, among other areas, Stan founded In January 2021, the company ImmuneMist LLC to provide the American people with 1% iodine, nasal and oral cleansing products.

With his experience in the industry, he knew it was imperative to create a product in the cosmetic category as a “cleanse” and to make no medical claims surrounding the product. With that choice, this brave man has been able to help thousands of people with more than 15 million doses delivered to people’s noses with proven effective 1% iodine Nasal & Oral, cleansing options. The FLCCC doctors, Dr. Paul Marik and Dr. Pierre Kory, and other doctors of this organization, started endorsing Immunemist in July of 2021. This appearance of intolerance for innovation during 2020-2022, would also be witnessed as other Brave Americans attempted to repurpose old drugs like Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine.

It would seem that a worldwide pandemic would be the perfect time to reward mavericks for their innovation, especially, when they produce longstanding science to support their claims. This pandemic might have been a good time for our Federal leaders and agencies to make a path toward rapid drug approvals of innovative products, but, regrettably, that did not happen. Recently, ImmuneMist got approved for sale in China. China gave the product the highest level of drug approval it can. In China, the product ‘can’ state that it kills SARS and FLU. Because the invitro science and recent invivo studies state that iodine is that effective, perhaps this product stands to help who knows how many people in China where claims do not act as barriers to access to Intranasal Iodine.

It cannot be overstated that education on the science of Nasopharyngeal Sanitation should be considered invaluable to the American people. Being that we breathe about 20,000 gallons of air a day, it is in our best interest to familiarize ourselves with ways that we can mitigate upper airway pathogens from taking hold in our nasopharynx. Comparing each product by how rapidly it kills pathogens is measured in log reductions. (Each log reduction is a factor of 10) Thankfully, experts like Stan Lech have made the science of Nasal Oral Sanitation easier for people to understand. The study, Comparison of In Vitro Inactivation of SARS CoV-2 with Hydrogen Peroxide and Povidone-Iodine Oral Antiseptic Rinses, has an excellent chart for comparisons of Log Reduction Values.

Here are some important takeaways from the interview:

The Saccharine Clearance Test is used to test how rapidly your mucociliary system is clearing itself, based on how much mucus your produce. Clearing can be from every 5-20 minutes, but the Average time to clear is 10-15 min. Many factors, like hydration, can affect your clearance times. If you are using a Nasal sanitation option that has a kill rate that takes longer than 10-15 min to kill, then the product has already been cleared from your nasopharynx, before the product can do its job at killing pathogens. That is why Iodine is so effective. It kills within seconds. Long before your own system clears your nasopharynx, Iodine has killed the pathogens present. Stan teaches us that, ‘Any product that has less than a 3 log reduction (99.9 % in 60 seconds) is totally useless at blunting viral replication.”

Povidone Iodine:  (ImmuneMist has 4-5 log reductions in a few seconds, CofixRX product likely has the same log reduction, being that it is an Iodine product as well) PVPI is a long-standing safe product used for decades within the medical community preoperatively, postoperatively, and therapeutically throughout healthcare. Numerous studies have been published for decades on its effectiveness in disinfection and safety.

In December 2020, Choudhury et al., Bioresearch Communications published, “Effect of 1% Povidone Iodine Mouthwash/Gargle, Nasal and Eye Drop in COVID-19 Patient,” discussing the efficacy of Iodine as a nasal, oral and Eye cleanse, to mitigate COVID-19. Another Study compared invitro inactivation of SARS CoV-2 with hydrogen peroxide (H202) and povidone-iodine (PVP-I)oral antiseptic rinses at different clinically recommended concentrations and contact times of 15 & 30 seconds.  It was concluded that “SARS-CoV-2 virus was completely inactivated by PVP-I oral antiseptic rinse in vitro, at the lowest concentration of 0.5 % and at the lowest contact time of 15 seconds. Hydrogen peroxide at the recommended oral rinse concentrations of 1.5% and 3.0% was minimally effective as a viricidal agent after contact times as long as 30 seconds. Therefore, preprocedural rinsing with diluted PVP-I in the range of 0.5% to 1.5% may be preferred over hydrogen peroxide during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Hypertonic, saline, nasal irrigation has proven very effective. It’s believed that saline converts to low-dose hypochlorous acid at the interface of the mucus membranes, which is the same disinfection species as pool water.

Xylitol products like XLEAR need to be used multiple times a day because it is not a rapid or potent killer of pathogens. More frequent use is required.

Grapefruitseed Extract also has a slow kill rate, but, does Increase salivary flow, and that is a good thing for the mouth.

Hydrogen Peroxide has a rapid kill rate, with 3% H202 having a log reduction rate of 1.33, but, can be desiccating (drying) to the mucus membranes and can become unstable faster than Iodine. Catalase enzymes in cells protect from hydrogen peroxide toxicity. This is why you see foaming of cuts and if you use hydrogen peroxide in the mouth. Our fluids contain catalase that rapidly neutralizes peroxide, making it harmless water and oxygen gas. The 3 percent peroxide can have stabilizers and is slightly acidic to preserve the peroxide plus, the brown bottle protects from light, as the light will decompose peroxide quickly. Here is a study comparing Iodine with H202.

Alcohol products like NOZIN have a rapid kill rate, with 1 log reduction, but, can only be used on the rim of the nose, and cannot be sprayed into the Nasopharynx; therefore, cannot mitigate pathogens in the nasopharynx; only pathogens at the rim of the nose.

Nitric Oxide:  SaNOtize & Enovid  “SaNOtize NONS is a nitric oxide nasal spray that releases a small dose of nitric oxide and is designed to kill viruses in the upper airways.” Though it is effective at killing COVID, it is much slower than Iodine. Enovid has 1 log reduction over 24-48 hours. “Phase 3 clinical trial demonstrated a reduction in viral load in COVID-19 patients by more than 94% within 24 hours of treatment, and by more than 99% in 48 hours. Use it 5 to 6 times a day as a treatment. SaNOtize nasal spray prevents viruses from incubating and spreading to the lungs by providing a physical and chemical barrier. It doesn’t just block viruses but actually kills them. Enovid can be used daily as a proactive measure, simply use it before and after suspected exposure to viruses in high-risk environments. Nitric Oxide is known for its antimicrobial qualities, and SaNOtize’s product has a practical way to deliver it as a liquid, while the Nitric Oxide is formed only upon administration when all liquid ingredients are mixed.” You can see they report a reduction in 24-72 hours, and the mode of action is acidification of the nasal mucosa. This is a slow and less effective way to kill covid as it is not sensitive to pH change. This is far too slow in reducing the rate compared to povidone-iodine, which happens in seconds.
The statement that NO reduces virus by 94 percent in 24 hours !! This means a kill rate of 0.94 log. This is less than a 1 log reduction and will not prevent or slow the infection process. This means 6 percent of the virus is still replicating into millions of more viruses. More information on How Nitric Oxide works can be found HERE.

I am thankful for the education on Nasal Oral Cleansing brought to us by Stan Lech. Stan has a broad background in general medicine, Pharmacy, engineering, and finance, and it was his long-standing background in innovation within this industry that gave him the insight to create an oral and nasal cleanse with Povidone Iodine. Nurses like myself were highly censored in our attempts to teach DIY 1% Iodine recipes to the public when this should have been broadcast on every news channel. Let’s do what we can, to make sure, history never repeats itself again. Let’s reward innovators and make it easy for them, to share their minds, with the people, for the good of humankind.
